COURSE Selection

Arts
The Arts learning area includes visual art (design, painting, photography and sculpture), drama and music. These subjects may be taken as options from Year 9.

Business and Digital Technologies
Students may take Business and Computing courses as options in Year 9 and 10. At Year 11 Accounting and Legal Studies also become available. Both NCEA and Cambridge courses are offered in this learning area.

English
Students must take English in Year 9, 10 and 11. Students are strongly recommended to continue with English studies in Year 12 to gain the literacy requirement for university entrance. Both NCEA and Cambridge courses are offered in this learning area.

International Languages
Students may take French, Chinese and Spanish as options from Year 9. Extension students are strongly recommended to take a language course.

Mathematics
Students must take Mathematics in Year 9, 10 and 11. Both NCEA and Cambridge courses are offered in this learning area.

Physical Education and Health
Students must take a Physical Education and Health course in Year 9, 10 and 11. A range of courses is offered to take students through to Year 12 and 13.

Sciences
Students must take Science in Year 9, 10 and 11. At Year 12 and 13 students may specialise in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Both NCEA and Cambridge courses are offered in this learning area.

Social Sciences
Students are required to take Social Studies at Year 9 and 10. Geography and History become available at Year 11 and Classical Studies, Sociology and Tourism may be chosen at Year 12 and 13. Extension students in Year 10 may be offered the opportunity to sit NCEA Level 1 History or Geography.

Technology
Students may take technology subjects as options from Year 9. These include materials technology (eg wood, metal, soft materials), food technology and design technology.

Te Reo Rangitira
Students may take courses in Te Reo as an option from Year 9. In addition the Marautanga Curriculum provides students opportunities to study right up to Stage 1 University papers.

Examination Info
Itinerant Music Programme
This tuition scheme is designed to give all students the opportunity to learn a musical instrument where possible.
Lessons are on a small group basis for about 25 minutes per week in school time, usually on a rotating timetable. Some instruments are available to hire from school.

STATIONERY Lists
Stationery
Stationery should be purchased from local suppliers who are able to provide special prices and on-line purchasing at the beginning of the year. The Student Information Centre does carry some stationery items for sale throughout the year and specialist course booklets.
EXAMINATION Information
NCEA and Scholarship Examinations
NZQA examinations begin in November each year.
Cambridge Examinations
Cambridge examinations are held twice a year, usually in June and November.
School Examinations
Students sitting externally assessed courses sit examinations in term two and term three. Year 9 and 10 students sit examinations in Term four.
