He has achieved well academically and his opportunities and accolades in other fields are to be celebrated. He has a long list of regional and national accomplishments from his time at Heights Dance, and these successes allowed him the opportunity to lead the school's elite crew, Zenith, who have gone on to win most of the competitions they have entered.Leadership is an important quality to Sam and he has continued to develop in this area throughout his time at Western Heights High School, particularly being a Dance choreographer since Year 11. This year, Sam’s leadership roles include being a Prefect, Te Motutapu-ā-Tinirau House Captain, Peer Support Leader, Interact Club, YES Enterprise Business, Philippine Club of Rotorua Youth Leader.Sam also has a strong sense of community. He has enjoyed the Heights Dance culture and has worked hard to give back to the Dance community, working with his peers and supporting others’ growth and development. In a broader sense of community, he volunteered for a variety of community and charitable efforts throughout the Bay of Plenty as a result of his long-standing involvement in the Philippine Club of Rotorua. Along with that, Sam participated in the Rotorua Youth Festival (2020), the One Chance Youth Awards (2020), the Mayoral Concert (2020), Waitangi Cultural Day (2021), ANZAC Parade Dawn Service (2022), and Tamil Sangam Community (2022) just to name a few. Sam's journey has also been heavily influenced by the online community because he has served as a brand ambassador for organizations like City Beach Australia and Hallenstein Brothers.In 2023, Sam plans to study a Bachelor of Dance through the University of Auckland and already has placement at Okareka Dance Company and sees himself as a Creative movement Artist engaging in a Portfolio career within the next few years. ... Congratulations Koby!#HeightsProudKOBY GRIMESWESTERN HEIGHTS HIGH SCHOOLSport, Leadership, School and Community serviceKoby Grimes is a highly motivated, enthusiastic, well respected, and reliable leader. He works diligently towards achieving his goals, and this year was honoured to be named Deputy Head Boy at Western Heights High School.Leadership comes naturally to Koby. Within school he has taken on as many opportunities as he can. These include Peer Support Leader, Te Motutapu a Tinirau Junior and Senior House Captain, Sports Prefect, Junior Volleyball Coach, and First XV Captain.Sport is where Koby’s true passion lies. He has had the honour of attaining national status in Rugby League representing NZ Maori, played for Bay of Plenty Rugby League U17s and U18s, and for the Waicoa Bay Upper Central Zone Rugby League U16 squad. Aside from league, Koby is also a keen rugby player, representing Heights since 2018, playing for all Central Bay of Plenty age group teams, as well as captaining the 1st XV since 2021. He has also represented his school in VolleyBall, Touch, Ki o Rahi and School Rugby League. In 2021 Koby won Sportsman of the Year at Western Heights High School.Giving back to his school and community is imperative to Koby. He has volunteered for the school breakfast club, been a member of Western Heights ball committee and Leader of the fundraising sub-committee, coached rugby and touch at local schools, attended the Western Heights year 9 camp as a Year 13 camp leader, and has been a peer support leader. Congratulations Maia!#HeightsProudMAIA HULTON-HARRISONWestern Heights High SchoolLeadership, Cultural, Sport, School and Community ServiceMaia is a talented, confident and creative young woman that has been attending Western Heights High School for the last 5 years. Maia’s motto is “it’s better to try and fail than not try at all” and with this in her mind, she was able to try many different things and eventually find her passions.Maia found her passion in sports at a young age starting in Miniball and then joining Volleyball and Netball teams. Maia has had the honour of representing Heights and Rotorua in Netball. She has been in the Rotorua U/15 and U/18 Netball representative teams. She has been in the premier team for 3 years achieving the most improved player, most committed player and vice-captain for 2022.Through her years of school, Maia has developed a passion for Drama. She has had the honour to participate in the University of Otago’s Sheilah Winn Shakespeare festival. In 2021 Maia was able to gain runner-up for her 15 minute piece of Twelfth Night, which she directed and acted in. Maia also gained direct entry into National schools Shakespeare production where she was able to meet other students passionate about drama. Maia has also been able to perform in community theatre at Shambles Little Theatre performing in “A Christmas Carol” and she will be in the upcoming show “Treasure Island”.Maia has taken every leadership role that she can from being a young leader in primary to junior house captain then becoming Director, Vice-captain, House Leader and Prefect this year. She has learnt more about leadership through the Spirit of New Zealand, the Hillary Outdoors camp and the #Waikato Leadership Academy.Maia has been given as many opportunities as she has tried – and succeeded.
