Junior Curriculum

Junior Certificate

Students in Year9 and 10 will work towards their Western Heights High School Junior Certificate which can be endorsed with Merit or Excellence.  The WHHS Junior Certificate operates in a way that is similar to NCEA and will prepare students for NCEA.  Credits can be earned in two categories based on our school motto – Wisdom (awarded in subject areas) and Honour (awarded by House Group Tutors for modelling key competencies).

Students will be awarded their Junior Certificate if they reach 120 points overall, with 70 Merit credits needed fora Junior Merit Certificate and 70 Excellence creditsneeded for a Junior Excellence Certificate.

Subject Choice

All Year 9 and 10 students study English, Mathematics, Physical Education, Science and Social Studies.  Year 9 students take four half-year options and Year 10 students take two full-year options.  Full details of all courses are in the Junior Curriculum handbook which can be downloaded from this page.
